Ignoring Constituents

Perhaps nothing in politics bothers me more than when elected officials ignore their constituents. They are, after all, supposed to represent the will of the people, and yet too often they behave as if they do not have any obligation -- or even any intention -- to do that.

Here is one current example:

Most Wisconsinites think abortion should be legal in all or most cases, according to a Marquette University Law School poll. Sixty-two percent of Wisconsinites think the Supreme Court was wrong to overturn Roe v Wade in their Dobbs decision.  And yet consider the positions of Republican candidates. Tom Tiffany wants a national abortion ban. J.D. Vance opposes abortion even in the case of incest or rape. Eric Hovde said he was totally opposed to abortion when he ran for the Senate last time, and he approved the Dobbs decision. Above all, Donald Trump was responsible for that decision by naming anti-abortion judges to the court. Now Trump says it should be up to the states, but there is no doubt at all that if a national abortion ban passed Congress, he would sign it.

These Republicans are out of touch with their constituents. They are out of touch with Wisconsin. They are out of touch with reality.
